About me
Dr. Erin Barnes is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at the University of Iowa, where she teaches graduate counseling courses and leads initiatives focused on experiential, cooperative learning for adult learners. Over nearly 15 years in higher education, she has developed innovative clinical training partnerships with organizations including the Iowa City Senior Center, the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association of Iowa, the UI’s Student Disability Services office, the UI’s Dean of Students office, and the Pomerantz Career Center. Her recent grant-funded research examines the impact of deliberate practice software (Skillsetter) on clinical skill development among master’s-level trainees, and her 2026 National Career Development Association publication highlights the Academic Life Navigator project, a collaborative effort supporting neurodivergent student success. Dr. Barnes has received the University of Iowa College of Education’s Collegiate Teaching Award and theAssociation for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (ACES) North Central Supervisor of the Year Award (2023). Her service leadership includes contributing to institutional strategic planning efforts, serving as Director of Graduate Studies (2021-2024), coordinating clinical placements for counseling programs, chairing the ACES Clinic Directors and Placement Coordinators Interest Network (2022-2023; Co-Chair 2023-2024), and currently serving as Faculty Fellow for Faculty Development in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, and coordinator of the undergraduate Human Relations minor.
