Thomas A. Pear, M.A., M.Ed., is an English and ESL instructor whose work bridges composition studies, second language acquisition, and emerging educational technologies. He has taught in the Intensive English Program at the University of Miami, supporting multilingual learners in developing academic and professional communication skills.
Before teaching, Pear worked as a cops-and-courts reporter for the Cape Coral Daily Breeze and Plant City Courier. He was also a correspondent for The Virginian-Pilot. Journalism is where Pear developed expertise in libel standards, verification, and editorial responsibility. He has also taught journalism at Florida Gulf Coast University and Florida SouthWestern State College.
Pear's current work focuses on integrating artificial intelligence into education, and his previous journalism background compelled him to research, write, and present about the risks of over-reliance on AI-detection tools in academic misconduct cases. He examines how such practices may expose institutions to defamation claims and outlines alternative approaches that emphasize responsible AI use, critical thinking, and sound pedagogical design.
Pear has also presented on using AI in English language learning and in enhancing student engagement.
